DISAPPEARING WORLD: THE QUECHUA

CARLOS PASINI

United Kingdom / 1974 / 51'

Toribio's family live in Kamawuara in southern Peruvian Andes, where live Quechua populations. They live on those montains since before the Incas period. At an altitute of 3600 metres, they cultivate potatoes, the only good they trade. Toribio's son, Simon, who has worked in Lima, is more open-minded than his fellow citizens: he gathers the householders and asks them to subscribe a petition addressed to the Province Government, aimed to the building of a street that could end Quechua isolation. The community signed the proposal and ther petition reaches the district capital Cuzco, where it will be accepted. The Quechua will finally have their street.
