IL GENNARGENTU DI NATEDDU

DANIELE CINI

Italy / 1993 / 23'

In the centre of the future National Park of Sardinia there is a mountain called Gennargentu because here is the origin of the air current of the whole island or because the mountain shines like silver in winter when it is covered with snow. Here, in a secluded valley, lives an old shepherd, Nateddu, whose life style is the same as his ancestors. He lives in a sheepfold made of logs like an indian wigwam and, in his own words, partly in sardinian, an partly in broken italian he reveals in flashes his patheist philosophy. The film conveys his dependence on nature, the pact of honour he makes with the eagles so that he won't carry off the goats, his conversation with the domestic animals and his contempt for the neacrophagous animals. Almost in contrast we see a wild boar hunt which decimates the few examples left. It is the story of a large wild lung of Italy and the anxiety of a precarious future.
