BERGBAUERN IN FJORD-NORWEGEN

REINHARD KUNGEL

Germany / 2002 / 43'

The region of Norwegian fiords is in the extreme west of the mountains. The coastline falls vertically into the sea and makes it possible for ships and boats to navigate them. The fiords go up to 200 kilometres inland where grass grows only in isolated plateaus difficult to reach. Here a modest agricultural activity is possible and a few farmers have worked here for generations. We meet the eighty-year old Jon Bonde whose ancestors invented the Norwegian national instrument in the 17th century: the violin with additional strings with which Bonde plays and re-elaborates traditional country tunes. For him and his friend Peter Molvaer, the rugged nature surrounding them is a source of inspiration.
