GELADA BABOONS: THE BATTLES OF BRAVEHEART
United Kingdom / 2000 / 30'
This is the story of a male baboon, called ‘Braveheart’ in the documentary, who struggles to hang on to his harem with all his strength. The females demand constant attention and, as if that weren’t enough, he has to defend himself against the attacks of many other males who constantly threaten his domain. These Gelada baboons live in Ethiopia’s Semien mountains, the so-called ‘Roof of Africa’, at high altitudes and extreme temperatures, where no other monkeys could survive. They are excellent rock climbers and do not suffer vertigo as they manage to sleep on tiny ledges, scarcely wider than a monkey’s bottom, with a sheer drop beneath them.
