MOUNT NEMRUD: THE THRONE OF THE GODS
Turkey / 2000 / 52'
The tomb-sanctuary, built in the first century B.C. by Antiochus I on Mount Nemrud of Kommagene at an altitude of 2100 m in the region of Anatolia in Turkey, was considered the eighth wonder of the ancient world. The history of this extraordinary tomb monument with many giant stone statues, now unfortunately half-destroyed, is very attractively presented, with on-site interviews with world-renowned scholars, 3-D computer animations and historical film footage. The documentary includes never-before seen archival footage of the excavations and memoirs of the archaeologists Otto Puchstein and Theresa Goell, of the Berlin Academy of Science, who discovered and worked at the sanctuary in 1882. The film shot in a very difficult location, with breathtaking views of eastern Turkey, takes us on a journey to learn about the mysteries and controversies surrounding this ancient and unknown tomb of Antiochus the Great.
