LA SCOLA DA SOI
Switzerland / 2002 / 41'
The school of Soglio, a mountain village in Bregaglia, in the Swiss canton of the Grisons, was founded in 1749. In the scholastic year 1773/74 it was attended by 88 children and in 1900 there were 53 pupils, but owing to the fall in population after the Second World War the number of pupils continued to drop.
Despite this the school remained open until the present day, with a dozen or so pupils. After the primary schools were joined together in lower Bregaglia, the long story of events finally came to an end in 2001 and the Italian school with classes of different age groups closed its doors.
The film illustrates the school life of the last pupils of Soglio, their lessons in the small classroom and playing in the village alleys in their free time. Several generations of former pupils talk about the past, a historian recounts the history of the school and its most significant moments. Old photographs recreate the atmosphere of bygone times.
