GRAB IN EISIGEN HÖHEN

KARSTEN SCHEUREN

Germany / 2008 / 65'

Pakistan 8 July 2006: in the last picture showing Markus Kronthaler alive, we can see him raising his arms towards the sky in triumph. He was at an altitude of 8,047 metres - almost on the top. A few moments later he dropped dead on the ground because of dehydration, just a few metres from the summit. His partner had to leave his corps behind. For over a year, the corps of the young Austrian climber remained on the top of Broad Peak in Pakistan. Georg, Markus’s brother, decided to climb the eight-thousand metres to retrieve his brother’s corps and take it back home, as he had promised to his mother. Two friends accompanied him in his hazardous feat: the alpine guide Paul Koller, Stefan Lackner, six Pakistani porters and a Viennese cameraman Hubert Rieger, as the TV channel Prosieben was following the expedition. The participants of the expedition were twice obliged to leave the corps behind. The next day, the thick fog made it even harder to locate the corps and the situation seemed quite critical, leaving little hope for Georg and all those people who were following the enterprise with suspense. Exactly one year after the tragedy, on 20 July 2007, at last Markus’ corps was retrieved, thanks to his brother’s courageous and hazardous feat.
