The young Tahaan lives with his grand-father, mother and eldest sister in the Kashmir valley. They live in the hope that his father, who has been missing for over three years, will one day return home. . When his grand-father dies, Tahaan and his family have to face a difficult financial situation, where the unscrupulous usurer of the village deprives them of their small remaining wealth. Additionally, because of their debts, their beloved donkey Birbal is also confiscated. While the other members of the family try to find a solution to their financial problems, Tahaan is determined to bring Birbal back home and this becomes the aim of his life. After several attempts to rescue the donkey, Tahaan finds that the animal has been sold and taken far away, to the mountains, the same mountains from where his father has never returned. . For Tahaan it is high time to make his choice: give up or leave? His great affection for Birbal will encourage him to courageously face up to an adventurous journey, full of hazards, mysteries and unexpected meetings.


Santosh Sivan

Santosh Sivan graduated in cinematography at the Film and Television Institute of India. He started his career as director of photography. He worked in over 45 full-length fictional films in India and abroad, and collaborated with some of the greatest directors at international levels. His latest films as director include: Malli (1998), The Terrorist (1999), Asoka (2001), Prarambha (2007) and Before the Rains (2007).
