At the peak of the mountain, 2465 m above sea level, a weather observer has been stationed since 1886. Twice daily he telegraphs his measurements to Zurich, from where they are sent on to Rome, Berlin, Paris and Vienna. During the long winters the observer is cut offfrom the valley below - an anstronaut of the late 19th century. Following an accident in 1921 the decision is reached to fill the vacancy with a married couple.
