Auf Nordlandfahrt

1896 von Hamburg nach Spitzbergen

In summer 1896 a small ship left the port of Hamburg, heading for Spitzbergen, namely the frontier of the known world. The 52 passengers were the first tourists in history to visit the North Pole. Hans Beat Wieland, a Swiss artist, was with them, dedicating his time during the journey to his writing and drawings. 120 years later the historian Sandra Walser came across them in the works of Wieland.
