Leaving behind his violent past, Jeff Webster (James Stewart) chooses to change his life by heading for Alaska to sell his herd of cattle. However, the town of Skagway is tyrannised by Sheriff Gannon. Jeff decides to leave well alone and with the help of two women he crosses over into Canada and buys a mine. However, the gold is stolen from him by Gannon's men, at which point a showdown becomes inevitable. It was filmed in the Jasper National Park and on the slopes of the Athabasca Glacier in Canada.

Anthony Mann

Anthony Mann (1906 – 1967). After starting his career as casting director for David O. Selznick’s productions, in the 1940s he directed magnificent film noir such as DESPERATE (1947) and BORDER INCIDENT (1949). In the subsequent decade he turned his attention to Westerns, directing a number of classics, from THE FAR COUNTRY (1954) to MAN OF THE WEST (1958).
