Trog is a five-hundred-year-old farmhouse, now disused since the last farmer Uncle Hans died. The house tells the family story of the last three generations through the eyes and feelings of the many children born there in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. A complex and fascinating portrait develops of their mother, her love, and the house, told by eleven of those children of the last generation. At first glance, TROG sheds light on isolated and individual events, but these testimonies are reminiscent of those of many other Austrian families, which are rarely heard and told. Director Ella Hochleitner tackles her own family's story with incredible courage.

Slowly and with a sense of inexorability, the director takes us into a home that for many years has housed a family and its stories. The viewer witnesses the resurfacing of terrible memories that intertwine to make up a collective portrait of the matriarch, a strong woman marked by tragedy. The director succeeds, with great delicacy, in bringing to the surface what is normally hidden and voluntarily repressed, thus recovering a female story destined to be forgotten.
