The solitary ones are the meteorologists who live in a "station" at high altitude. Snow, ice, wind and cold are their companions during the long winter of the Yugoslav mountains. Their only connection with the world is the radio transmitter. When supplies are delayed - which a donkey carries with difficulty up through the deep snowfields - even the lack of cigarettes takes on the tones of a drama; and the longed-for arrival becomes an extraordinary event.
