The active volcano Niragongo, which rises 3470 meters near Lake Kiou, almost on Congo's borders with Uganda and Tanganyika, in the bottom of its crater arranged in terraces and concentric pits, preserves - sunken at 430 meters - the only lake, known to exist, of lava in permanent operation.
The study of this mysterious and acceptional phenomenon was completed, for the first time in history, by a scientific and military mission during August and September last year.
