A Soviet expedition, marking the Geophysical Year, was sent to the Pamirs to conduct seismic surveys on the Fedchenko Glacier. The researchers excavated snow, detonated dynamite to measure the stratigraphy of the soil and ice, and set up scientific equipment for wind monitoring. They also took the opportunity to go sailing and mountaineering.
