A new mountain sport has recently become popular in the Soviet Union. It involves climbing along the steep sides of a rock gymnasium in an agonistic discipline which may be considered athleticism in the mountains. In 1977 the International Championships for rock climbers were held, in which a series of competitions for individual and team climbing were organized. Many countries took part at the event: Japan, Poland, France, East Germany, Bulgaria and Russia. During the course of these International Championships, the Soviet mountaineers were particularly outstandings. They demonstrated their ability in the construction of ther Nurek hydrostation and during the restoration work of the Petropavlovsk fortress in Leningrad.
