In a historical setting at the end of the 19th century, a very poor peasant, living in one of the most deserted valleys of Oisan, fights against his destiny and poverty thanks to his unusual personality. Being a hunter of mountain goats he uses his knowledge of the mountains to guide the fist alpinists in the discovery of this little known region. Soon the alpinists attention is drawn to the Meije mountain and they bet on who will be the first to reach the top of it. Slowly Gaspard realizes the importance of interests at stake and so, with Boileau del Castelneu, he forms a roped party and, after several attempts they reach the top.
