About ten mountaineers, who in the sixties had made over a hundred first ascents in the Alps and about thirty expeditions to the Himalayas and the Andes, attempt to climb the Gasherbrum I. The expedition is led by Pierre Marzeaud, 55 years old, who has a number of great climbs to his name and who was one the minister of sport. In the expedition took part Lucien Berardini, Walter Cecchinel, Ludvik Kratochirl, François Hess, Gerard Vionnet-Fuasset, François Matter, François Thiriez and Gohar Shah.
