A naturalist from Geneva, De Saussure, explored the Miage glacier in 1774 in search of a way to climb the southern side of Mount Blanc. In 1778 instead he made scientific observations around Courmayeur. The film reconstructs these two events in "Journeys in the Alps", attempts to discover the reasons why the illuminist cultural élite were so interested in the Alpine world.
