Having reached Annapurna, the international expedition called "Esprit d'Equipe" led by Benoit Chamoux, attempts to reach the summit of Everest. The climb begins in August 1988 by eight alpinists who after having set up the base camp and the second camp at an altitude of 8300 metres, make various attempts to reach the summit without success owing to the terrible weather conditions and a polar temperature. Everyone decides to give up except of the Frenchman Parmentier who makes his last attempt on 20th september.. Parmeniter's body was found by a Spanish expedition on 4th october at a height of 7700 m.
