The biotopes in Trentino are protected areas instituted by law to conserve places of considerable environmental, cultural and scientific interest. The Fiave peat - bog is extremly interesting as it combines valuable naturalistic interest with archeological aspects of internatinal importance. It is one of the largest humid areas in the province of Trento. Despite man's millenial presence, the peat - bog is still almost completly intact. The vegetation is very varied and unique. There are many species of plants of considerable scientific interest. An extraordinary number of animals live in the peat - bog and rare species of birds nest there, whilst other stop there for food and rest during migration. The archeological importance of the Fiave peat - bog has been established by numerous field excavation that have uncovered two different lake dwelling settlements of the late Meolithic era and 1400 -1300 B.C.
