After the battle of Little Big Horn, in which General Custer died, Captain Nathan Brittles prepares for his last mission before retiring. Miss Dandridge and her aunt who have to be escorted to the stagecoach hinder his patrol. The protection of the two women prevents Brittles from stopping the Indians who obtain repeating rifles and kill the farmers. The captain is not even able to get the women to the coach. Brittles waits for night to fall and with his group lets loose all the Indian’s horses, thus preventing a war. Now retired, Brittles is riding towards the West when Sergeant Tyree catches him up with the news that he has been promoted to Colonel, as head of civilian guides. Back at the fort, Brittles visits the family grave.
