In 1943 three Italians escaped from an English prison camp, situated at the foot of Mount Kenja, just because they wanted to climb this fascinating rock castle standing on the horizon beyond the wirre netting. One of the three fugitives was called Felice Benuzzi and he told the tiry of this reckless and romantic adventure in a book, now famous, called “ fuga sul Kenya”.
Almost sixty years later and to mark the International Year of Mountains, four Italian alpinists covered the whole of the itinerary followed by Benuzzi and his two companions. First thery had to cope with the difficulties of the equatorial forest and then with the sheer rock face of the northwest side of the highest peak completely caked with ice and snow.
