The Kalash people, also called Kafiri, live in the high Hindukusch valleys, in North-West Pakistan near the Afghan borders. This is an ancient and particular population, radically different both in culture and religion from other populations of the country. Among the many peculiarities of this ethnic group is the fact that they maintain their pagan religion despite many centuries of Muslim domination. In spite of the archaeological findings and the anthropologic studies, the origins of this ethnic group remain a mystery. The Kalash people claim to have Greek origins, to descend from one of the legions of the Emperor Alexander the Great and to be protected by Nature and the Gods themselves. The director focuses on the colourful and delicate universe of the young Kalash women, following them both in their traditional everyday chores and in their current dreams and ambitions. He describes all this through an amusing and, at times, touching trip from the mountains to the town.
