The Kempfs are a family of breeders who live in three different farms at three different altitudes. In winter they live at 1,725 metres, in the middle of snow and ice, feeding their cattle with the hay cropped in the summertime on the steep meadows of the Schächental Valley in central Switzerland. They move from one place to the other with their children and cattle ten times a year, following the rhythm of nature. The family consists not only of father and mother, Max and Monika, and their two children Ueli and Wisi, age 3 and 5 respectively, but also of Max’s parents, Alois and Regina and his sister Marthi. This film is about the phenomenon of transhumance in the Alpine valleys, today more and more rare in Europe, but it is also the portrait of a family of breeders that carry on their life and activities in spite of the challenges of the modern world and globalization.
