The Call of the Wild chronicles the journey of Chris McCandless, a twenty-four year old aesthetic voyager, who died of privation in wild Alaska in 1992. During his journey, the director Ron Lamothe meets a whole cast of characters inspired by McCandless. Some of them have known him in person, some others haven’t, some respected him whereas some discredited him. Lamothe also meets Sean Penn and his troupe, while they were shooting, at the same time as the documentary, a Hollywood film about McCandless.. In Alaska, following in the boy’s footsteps up to the bus where he meets his end, the film finds evidence that casts new light on the case. It explores a variety of subjects and themes that originate from McCandless’ story and are connected to the life of the director: Generation-X, wild deserts and the American imaginative world, rites of passage and the changing of the American cultural landscape.
