In 1924 English mountaineer George Mallory was determined to become the first man to scale the virgin peak Mount Everest. He decided to risk everything and embarked on his venture. He was last seen 800 metres from the peak; he and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine then disappeared from sight. Their story was to become legend. In 1999, 75 years after the tragedy, Mallory’s frozen body was found; he had all of his personal belongings with him, except for the photograph of his wife Ruth, which Mallory had promised to take to the top of the mountain. Fascinated by the mystery that still surrounds that expedition, mountaineer Conrad Anker decided to return to the Roof of the World to discover the truth behind Mallory’s life and death.
