In 1968 friends Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins, who later founded Patagonia and North Face respectively, embarked on a 5000-mile journey along the coast of California to Patagonia in a search for unexplored mountains and virgin waves. In 1999, while watching the films the two had made, US adventurer Jeff Johnson dreams of following in his heroes’ footsteps. In 2007, Johnson drops everything and sets off on a six-month adventure across North and South America. During his journey, he is shipwrecked off Easter Island, faces the biggest wave of his life and prepares for an arduous climb of the Cerro Corcovado. Johnson’s life changes when he discovers Chouinard and Tompkins in a hut. Once driven purely by their love of climbing and surfing, the two friends are now inspired by the wilds of nature. They came to Patagonia to spend their fortunes on protecting it from the threat of pollution.
