The Zanskar, hidden away in the heart of the Indian Himalayas, is a small, forgotten realm perched at an altitude of 3000 meters and hemmed in by mountains that rise over 7,000 meters high. During the winter, which lasts for eight months, the snow-clad mountain passes are inaccessible, and the Zanskari are entirely cut off from the rest of world. The Chadar then becomes their only link to the outside. This partially frozen river forms a 120-km-long trail along a narrow gorge that winds through the steep mountains. The Chadar is a dangerous ordeal for both children and grown men, a daunting confrontation with cold, fatigue and thirst, along with fear, dizzying heights and demons.
