Zef Sokoli is the Bajraktar of the Dukagjin: the “flag-bearer”. He rallies his men with a rifle blast whenever something threatens their villages in mountainous northern Albania. He receives the members of various tribes in his ancestral home, mediating between them in disputes or yet another bloody feud. His kingdom, however, is crumbling. Increasing numbers of mountain people are heeding the call of the cities. Even the heirs of the Bajraktar, his three sons, have gone to the valley to seek work and build themselves a future. But one of them must follow in their father’s footsteps: it is tradition. The chosen one will find himself at a crossroads: one direction leads to the archaic world of the mountains, the other towards the modernity of the city.
