Every day, all over the world, large quantities of highly radioactive waste are placed in provisional storage areas, vulnerable to natural and man-made calamities. In Finland the first permanent storage area is being constructed: an enormous system of underground galleries carved out of the rock. It is fundamental that it last 100 thousand years, because this is how long the waste will remain dangerous. Once sealed the system will never be opened again. But can we really be certain of this? How is it possible to warn our descendents of what we are leaving behind us?
