The region of Wakhan, in Afghanistan, is a strip of land winding its way between tall mountains where war has never arrived. The last Kyrgyz nomads live on the extreme edge of this area, on the Pamir tablelands. Eloise Barbieri lived in their camps for two months during the winter, finding a way to access the secret universe of the women and recounting the fears and hopes of a people forgotten by the modern world.
