Steve Judd (Joel McCrea), an ageing former sheriff, is charged with escorting a gold shipment from a mountaintop mining town to the bank, aided by his erstwhile deputy, Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott), and his young sidekick, Heck. In truth, Gil and Heck would like to convince Judd to keep the gold and run away, but the former lawman is a man of honour. The second film by Sam Peckinpah, to whom we pay tribute on the 100th anniversary of his birth. It was filmed in the Sierra Nevada and partly in Los Angeles' Griffith Park.

Dai rapporti sempre burrascosi, quando non rissosi, con i produttori, ha diretto altri titoli di culto come GETAWAY! e PAT GARRETT E BILLY THE KID (1974).
