Steve Judd (Joel McCrea), un maturo ex sceriffo federale, deve scortare un carico d'oro da una città mineraria in montagna alla banca, aiutato dal suo vice di un tempo, Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott), e dal suo giovane compare, Heck. In verità Gil e Heck vorrebbero convincere Judd a tenersi l'oro e a fuggire, ma l'ex sceriffo è tutto d'un pezzo. Secondo film di Sam Peckinpah, del quale omaggiamo i 100 anni dalla nascita. È stato girato sulla Sierra Nevada e in parte nel Griffith Park di Los Angeles.

Sam Peckinpah
Sam Peckinpah (1925 – 1984). After long experience as a television director, he arrived on the big screen with powerful Westerns such as RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY (1962) and THE WILD BUNCH (1969). While his relationships with his producers were always stormy, when not quarrelsome, he went on to direct other cult films such as THE GETAWAY and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID (1974).
