Reinhold Messner, the only mountaineer in the world to climb over 8000 metres three times, has declared that we will never go back to the south face of Dhaulagiri in central Nepal. The expedition, which should have taken Messer and his companion Habeler to the previously unclimbed "White Mountain" left in July 1977 with a series of scientific tasks ordered by Professor Dyrenfurth. The bad weather obliged the expedition to wait in the snow-covered base camps, and made any attempt to climb, under the costant threat of avalanches and falling rocks, utterly useless. therefore Messner and his friends had to give up and return home.
