The Japanese team of the '78 expedition of Nihon University, accompanied by a HTV team, crossed the frozen wastes from north of the Ellesmere island to the North Pole. The group leader, Ikuo Oshima, who had left his native Japan five years before to live with the eskimoes, is the contact between the latter and the members of the expedition. In order to reach the North Pole, the Japanese explorers have to compete in an authentic marathon with other expeditions. In spite of the difficult weather conditionds they are the first Japanese and the fifth team to reach the pole.
