The jounrey made by an old solitary smuggler who traded between Switzerland and Valle d'Aosta at the foot of Grand Combin is reconstructed. Real mountain men, with their French-Provencal accent, provide the voice and face of the leading character who comes int contact with a number of people such as his wife, daughter, granddaughter, the children of mountain pastures, and a persecuted politician who asks for help. In his story Efisio reveals all his philosophy and humanity.
