In the summer of 1974 the Ladakh borders - ex-himalayan kingdom along the upper course of the Indus - are opened to foreign tourists. Centuries of isolation are followed by a tourist boom that threatens to upset the history and culture of Tibet. Only in winter, when the Himalayan passes are snowed up and temperatures reach very low degrees, do the local traditions and culture re-emerge in the absence of tourists.
