Scientists from the Smithsonian's Marine System Laboratory leave for an expedition lasting four months to study the coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea. They are going to work in remote areas never studied before. Twelve scientists with their floating laboratory undertake a journey of five thousand miles from the river Potomac to the western Caribbean waters and back. This film illustrates how it was discovered that the coral reefs produce a large amount of seaweed in waters with little nutrition.
