The American China-expedition of 1984 crosses Tibet to climb the treacherous north wall of the highest mountain in the world. This wall is in Chinese territory and the film also dwells upon aspects of the environment and the work of man showing briefly some of the most interesting temples of Tibet. The expedition, composed of some well-known climbers, is led by Lou Whittaker who had already climbed K2. A member of the expedition reaches the peak.
