Malpaso is a lake and at its shores begins the tropical forest of Mexico called "Selva del Mercadito". Eight biospelaelogical expeditions effected by the Rome University and the Lincei Academy have discovered more than 160 subterranean caves and 150 species of animals all new for science. The last research expedition, which is also the most important one, was documented by an Italian television team.
