We are in the Tatra mountains, beyond the edge of the wooded area, in the kingdom of marmots, chamois and steinbocks that were once very numerous but are now reduced to a few hundred specimens. This reduction is not only the result of a natural selection and the fight for survival but also because of the presence of man who does not realize that he is only a guest and often an unwelcome one. Man is generally avoided but in some cases he is accepted by the animals that become almost tame and thus lose their natural instinct to defend themselves against the animals of prey.
