In a reserve in Yugoslavia the conditions are ideal for the reproduction and survival of the bear. Bears exist here in great numbers. They are protected and accepted by the local population who have discovered they are even a source of income. Because of their numbers the bears have to be carefully kept under control by selective hungint. Although it is only possible to kill a certain number after paying quite a big fee, about eight million lire, this does not discourage rich western hunters for whom the bear is a much desired trophy.
