The film traces the environmental and antropic development of the mountain of Vanoise from the ice age to the present. In particular it dwells upon the origins of man in this region and how he has managed to make a living over the centuries and create a culture and a civilization that respects nature. Nevertheless the respect between man and nature was broken during the last century. On 8 September 1860 a man violated the mountain peak for the first time just because he wanted to conquer it. A new and different mountain civilization was born, that of leisure time, in the name of which everything is allowed.
