In 1986, the English explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, accompanied by Mike Stroud, attempted to reach the North Pole on foot, without the help of dogs or planes, pulling a sledge of 6 tons over about 870 km of arctic desert. The aim was to cover the distance in 60 days but the attempt failed due to bad weather and hayardous environmental conditions.
