Getting to the North Pole once meant hardship, dog sleighs and horrendous snowstorms, today polar tourists sip champagne in relative comfort. The Russian icebreaker Rossija carries 50 western tourists straight through the ice to the North Pole in 1990. The film permits us to take a closer look at this new style of polar exploration which is quite different from those we have been used to in the past.
