In the valleys of Nepal live the natives who work as mountain guides, cooks and prters for the expeditions to the highest mountains in the world. In the pioneer years of the struggle to defeat the Himalaya 2,5 % of them never came back. The Yugoslav alpinist Ales Kunaver, leader of the expeditions on Annapurna, the south wall of Makaly and the south wall of Lhotse, considered the natives to be very good workers but lacking a basic education in mountaineering. He decided to found a school for mountain guides, the only one of this kind in the Himalaya. In this school in Nepal more than 50 instructors of Alpinism and physicians from seven coutries have, in ten years taught 310 natives a profession.
