Mountaineering was born 500 years ago, just a few month before Christopher Columbus discovered America. In fact on 26 June 1492, Antoine de Ville, a captain in Charles VIII's army, leading a small group of climbers scaled, for the first time "Mons inaccessibilis". Today Mount Aiguille, which is part of the calcareous cliff of Vercors, is climbed by many along the normal route, but expert climbers, like Rene Desmaison, have opened spectacular climbs. For the celebrations of the 500th anniversary, the film recalls the story of Mount Aiguille which rises in a region that is still protected, but is threatened by future plans for tourism.
