One of the quickest ways across the Alps passes Saint Gotthard mountain. The route has almost become a Swiss myth, where the whole of Europe crosses the country through the Canton of Uri. It winds with difficulty between steep rocks and gorges along motorways, railways and mountain roads. The Canton's inhabitants have been complaining for years about he damage of their environment, the air they breathe, the countryside and their living space, which is particularly affected by the heavy road traffic. The great NLFA (New Railway Line across the Alps) should, in principle, improve the situation by transporting all heavy goods traffic by rail. This project is likely to gain widespread aproval in Switzerland and many politicians think it will contribute to the protection of the environment. Nevertheless parliament has not approved the project, which has also met opposition in the Canton of Uri where many people fear it will increase the traffic flow.
