At the beginning of July 1961 two separate roped parties attempted the first ascent of the central pillar, one of the unconquered walls in the Mont Blanc Massif. During the ascent the two parties met and decided to continue together. An incredibly long and violent storm forced the two parties to return to Gamba refuge.
